Writers’ Group Poetry Showcase
On Thursday evening, the Writers’ group performed some of their poetry to a group of parents in the Library as part of the TAG Litfest 2017.
This is a dedicated group of seven girls (we do want boys to join) who have spent the year writing the most powerful and skilful poetry. It is revealing, crafted and profound. Also sometimes funny.
The members come from years 8 to 10 and in some cases they have been writing for three years. One has been entered in the Young Writers’ competition and has reached the finals; this is not the first time that this has happened to a member of the group. A booklet of work has been produced, and there is a sample below of two of the poems.
The Writers’ group will, I hope, continue to meet and to astound.

Important Message - Changes to Payments for School Dinners
Have you Registered for Scopay?
Earlier this year the academy introduced a new online payment system, Scopay, to enable parents to make payments to the academy for trips, and other resources via a credit or debit card. Thank you if you have signed up for the online account as it has led to significant efficiencies within the academy, and hopefully you will have seen the benefits of paying online too.
With effect from Monday 5th June 2017 the academy will also be moving from sQuid to Scopay for online school dinner payments. It is extremely important that parents register their Scopay account in advance of this change to allow payments to be made online. The registration instructions, and one time link code, have been resent to all parents yet to create an account. Payments for school dinners will be accepted through Scopay from 4 pm on Friday 2nd June 2017.
All online sQuid accounts will be blocked at the end of this half term and any balance outstanding on accounts at Friday 26th May will be transferred over to the new Scopay system by the new operators.
Please be aware that if you have not granted permission for your child to use the current fingerprint system for lunches, they will not be able to use this function with Scopay.
Students will be able to load their accounts with money via cash machines in the canteen and opposite A Block Sports Hall. These units will accept the new £5 notes and £1 coins from 5th June 2017.
Please note that there are a number of year group trips planned for the end of this term and these will also all require online payment via Scopay.

Former Pupil Signs for LCWFC
We've had some great news about former Arnold Hill pupil, Katie Waddell. Katie first started playing football when she was just four years old and while she was still at juniors got the chance to train with David Beckham and other Real Madrid stars after winning a footballing competition. Katie was signed for Doncaster Belles, and from there joined St Leo's University Soccer School, Florida on a scholarship. Last week it was announced that she will be moving back to England to play for Leicester City Women Football Club, the press announcement can be viewed here.
We are so pleased with the success she has had academically in the US and also in her football career after her time at Arnold Hill Academy.
Family of Schools Closer Working
On Monday 16th January, Mr Smith (Head of KS3 English) visited students in Year 6 at Coppice Farm Primary School to deliver a Literacy session on reading skills. The session comprised of activities linking inference to the real world and also provided the children with a chance to develop their skills and confidence with reading. Students were rewarded for their contributions and participated exceptionally well throughout the session. At the end of the session, students left with a huge sense of achievement and the Deputy Head Teacher provided plenty of positive feedback.
Arnold Hill’s relationship with feeder primary schools continues to prosper and there are many other things going on linked to transition. In addition to working with Coppice Farm Primary School, Mr Smith and Mr Wilson will also be continuing their English and Maths link work with the following schools throughout this academic year: Mapperley Plains Primary School; Ernehale Junior School; Arno Vale Junior School and Arnold View Primary School. The Year 6 students are responding incredibly well to the additional support and Arnold Hill is really grateful to children and the staff in our feeder schools for allowing us to work with them.
Watch this space for further updates regarding the excellent work that we are doing to ensure that the profile of Arnold Hill is raised within the community and that our new cohort of Year 7 students from September 2017 have exciting opportunities to get exclusive insights into our spectacular A block building.
Cross Country Success in the Notts Schools Winter League
It’s been an absolutely fantastic start to the season for Arnold Hill Academy’s cross country runners. The team enjoyed further success at the weekend in the Notts Schools Cross Country Winter league which took place at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. Our year 10/11 boys took the gold medal in their age category, with James Dickinson finishing 2nd overall in the individual competition.
Other standout results were Lauren McNeil finishing 2nd in the Y8/9 girls’ individual competition, Ava Remzi finishing 4th in the Y10/11 girls’ competition and the Y8/9 boys’ team who finished in second place overall.
It was a great effort from all involved and we are extremely proud of you all.
Our winning Y10/11 boys' team are pictured with their medals.
